Mac free any data recovery mac5/27/2023 Spinrite will let you know if it repaired any sectors and then you can try putting it back in your mac. The kind of issue you're having suggests errors right at the beginning of the drive, possibly even in the boot sector. Boot using the spinrite cd, pick the options you want, and it'll check the sectors on the drive to repair it and try to recover the data. Connect the damaged drive to a sata port on the PC motherboard (I guess I should add this is easiest with a desktop). You'll burn a bootable cd using Spinrite. Thank you all for your advice and suggestions! This place is an invaluable resource for people like me! Update: It was just the cable!! My hard drive is a-ok and all my data is still there! The folks at the Apple store were able to replace the cable on the spot and it was covered under Apple Care! I'm so relieved and am glad I'm able to share a happy ending to the story! No idea if that makes a difference or not. The tech I spoke to over the phone today said it is definitely a hardware issue, not software, and unless I spilled something on the computer or dropped it (nope and nope), it is a result of just plain bad luck - probably got jostled the wrong way or something. I have an appointment with Apple on Friday to drop the computer off and the hard drive will be replaced (covered under Apple Care!) but is there ANY chance of getting any of my data back? ![]() ![]() About 50-75% of my files are still on an old Macbook Pro, but a few semesters' worth of school work and easily a few thousand photos (mostly of my pets and what not) were saved only to that computer. As the title says, my hard drive is dead and I have no backup of my data (I don't know why - I really thought I was smarter than that!).
